Awesome home grow compact linear tracking system

We have a lot of home made equipment, my favourite at the moment is our five foot linear tracking system, this cost £25 ( about $55) to make, and works amazingly well. Not only can it fit in a back pack but it can take a huge weight, in fact the heavier the better! The only precision parts are the bearings ( about $3 each ) they are from skate board wheels. the 'dolly' part itself fits into a small rucksack and is simply bits of aluminium cut to size, all off cuts from a metal shop. All you need is a drill a saw and a tap and die set, and if you're really posh some paint. The things it sits on are door handles and the big screw knobs are off a roof rack. One last point is the tracks have Teflon tape on them so the dolly runs silently. Though I'm sure any smooth tape would have worked. Here are some pictures of it.

Looks great fortress island.

I don't see the teflon tape in the photos...I am really curious about the noise/smoothness of metal to metal and how you incorporated the teflon tape.

Hi Jason,

The tape is clear, and is like a thick very smooth Gaffa tape. It completely silences the rolling of the bearings on the tube, with out the tape, yes it's a little noisy but not silly. I wouldn't know where to get that particular tape from as it's an aircraft product which I 'borrowed' from work!
