Fellas,

Some good news. It's now possible to use G-Techs well known G-raids as a raid 1 mirror. That means a 6tb G-Raid can be configured as a 3tb Mirror. Awesome.

Unfortunately, Gtech doesn't really want this publicized. I had to battle with customer service to get the link below. I'll let you be the judge as to why... G tech has some pricy raid options available for those willing. Enough said.

Download the new "Configurator" here. It's built for the new "mini" G-Raid, but it functioning perfectly on my 4tb G-Raid. Follow the directions:

Raid 5 is the preferred format for mirrored video arrays. You can lose a drive and still run with no loss of data from the remaining drives while the replacement drive is rebuilt. More efficient use of space as you only lose the capacity of one drive out of the array instead of half capacity with raid 1.

I'm not sure how this is news. I've known how to do this since I bought my first G-Raid Mini last year, unless you are referring to a product other than a G-Raid/G-Raid Mini.

Raid 5 isn't mirroring, it is striping with parity. Raid 1 is already mirroring. So it seems this configurator thing is actually taking G-Techs Raid 0, and making it a Raid 0+1.

Not sure what you're saying here...it is impossible to have both RAID 0 and RAID 1 at once...the closest would be 5. The configurator software, which comes preloaded on G-Raid drives, allows you to toggle the drive between RAID 0 (the default setting) and RAID 1.

Wow, snappy response and inaccurate info. Let's all chill, they're only hard drives.

This specific configurator gives you options for both formats as you'd expect - raid 0 or 1 for the regular size G-Raid. The point is... that until now, the newest generation of G-raids (not the G-Raid mini) we're only configurable as a big disk (R0), and that's how they're been marketed. Check BH or anywhere else and look at the specs. I believe the older model came with a proper configurator, but newer ones have been missing that feature.

Until this.

Under "Downloads" is the link you specified which is listed as:

Download this application to configure the RAID level on your or G-RAID mini.

I think it's a typo and is missing "G-RAID". I've only used a full sized G-RAID once and wanted it striped, so it may not have come with the software, but I knew about the configurator software and would have at least tried it on a G-RAID drive to set the RAID type.

Outside of that, I'm not sure if my "innacurate info" includes the fact that you cannot run a drive in RAID 0+1...

Well, I suppose you could say it's an intentional typo. Like I said, the link I provided isn't hosted on the support site. G-tech told me specifically they don't want it public right now.

The old configurator "G-Tech Configurator-0810" (available here: http://www.g-technology.com/support/graid_mini.cfm) is a different version of software than the link above. It does not recognize the newer G-Raids ability to operate as a mirror.

...it is impossible to have both RAID 0 and RAID 1 at once...

From wikipedia:

In RAID 10 (mirroring and striping), data is written in stripes across the primary disks and then mirrored to the secondary disks. A typical RAID 10 configuration consists of four drives. Two for striping and two for mirroring. A RAID 10 configuration takes the best concepts of RAID 0 and RAID 1 and combines them to provide better performance along with the reliability of parity without actually having parity as with RAID 5 and RAID 6. RAID 10 is often referred to as RAID 1+0 (mirrored+striped).

My fault on clarification. G-RAIDs are two drive units. G-Speeds are four, which would allow for that.

Question? So I just got my 4TB G-Raid. I saw this post, downloaded the Configurator and I think I did it right. After I set up the raid 1, the G-Raid showed up on my desktop as 2TB as it naturally should have. My concern is whether it is actually mirroring? And how can I verify whether it is or isn't?
