AVP vs Film Cliches

Okay, the person who walks into Aliens Vs Predator and storms out griping about Film Cliches most absolutely definitely needs to be slapped. (and that person is me)

But STILL, I can't help myself.

First: I expected this movie to be horrendous, and it was surprisingly watchable, so long as you listen to yourself carefully as you enter the theatre and state "I would like to buy one ticket for Alien vs Predator" (yes, one. If you have a girlfriend and take her to this movie, your -next- ticket purchase will be for one, I promise)

Second: this is something that's been bothering me more and more as I get old er and watch more and more movies, and I need communal support, like AA, but better.

The people that made blockbusters in the 80s and 90s, grew up on..well I don't know what they grew up on, I was working through middle school. But the people that are making blockbusters today grew up on stuff in 80s and the 90s. Which is great, on some level, because we can (allegedly) relate to them, from sharing more of the same interests, but too much is getting recycled in the name of familiarity.

This is the second movie I've seen this year (and no this won't spoil anything) where the climax is something sinking to the bottom of the ocean.

I'm also real burned out on the shot of the person hurtling across a chasm, with both arms and legs behind them. The first time I saw it was in Cliffhanger, but I think I've seen it this summer in Chronicles of Riddick.

SOooo what I propose is a cliche archive. Our duty is to fill it with info, so that current and future filmmakers can go to the page and say "Should I have a scene where someone Jennifer Connely looks out over a pier?" and then they'll see screen grabs from Requiem for a Dream, Dark City, and the House of Sand and Fog, and know better.

"Should I make John Cusack run through the rain?" the answer is a resounding No. I don't even know why they shoot new Cusack rain scenes, don't they have some outtakes from other movies they could use?

I'll even pay for the hosting and nonsense if you guys will chip in. I have no idea how to take screen grabs of DVDs, but if you guys say it's doable, I'll do more than my share of the cliche identification.

This has to stop. Why go to the movies if you're just seeing the same ones over and over again?

SPOILERS:

I thought this movie was pretty good until.............................

The predator and the girl team up. What the hell was that about?

Re: AVP vs Film Cliches

That was straight out of the comic book.  However, in the comic book, I do believe she was a security officer who could kick some serious ass and usually carried a weapon.  She was definitely not an expedition leader.

I'd like to see someone like The Rock or Vin Diesel team up with a Pred.  Now that would be cool.

Film clichés in AVP:

Like mentioned above: person jumps across gorge and barely makes it to the other side. Rocks give way and the person starts to fall, but a hero lunges over and grabs their arm just in the nick of time. This must be in hundreds of movies and I don't even think it's possible.

A bomb is getting ready to detonate, the clock counts down and the protagonist has only seconds to escape. He runs as fast as he can and jumps at the last minute... just barely escaping the blast. Alien vs. Predator ripped this off of the first predator with Ahnold.

The heroes are in an ancient tomb filled with amazingly advanced booby-traps and hidden levers. They accidentally touch the wrong thing and a huge rock slab starts to close potentially trapping them inside. The heroes dive through the small opening just barely making it through. This is a rip-off of Indiana Jones which may be a rip-off of something else for all I know.

The fearless leader in charge that doesn't take no for an answer and always knows what's best for everyone else. They don't take any guff from anyone and never back down. They're always saying things like "You hired me for the job and I'm in charge, now do what I say... follow me!".

People getting thrown through walls during fight scenes. How many times have you seen two adversaries in movies fighting with one of them pinned on the ground. Then the person on the bottom kicks the other one off of him and through a wall.

An adventurous mission in a far-off place that is dangerous and requires a team of the best [fill in the blank] in the world. This team is briefed on the mission and then flown by helicopter to the mission site. The main hero is usually reluctant and has some conditions. Again, a rip off of the first Predator.

That's just what I can think of off the top of my head. It's like these Hollywood execs, just go to Blockbuster and rent some movies to get their ideas. Although I enjoyed watching AVP, it's really just a bunch of scenes from Alien and Predator movies, with a flimsy plot, and some film clichés mixed in.
