avi - plays in anything BUT Vegas

First I converted the native GH1 mov's into mp4's - they were suuuuper slow and basically unusable.
Then, based on advice here, I converted the mov's to avi's - these won't play in Vegas! All I get is the audio in both the Preview window & when I move the clip from the Project Media window into the timeline.

And this is driving me nuts - the clips play fine in both WMV and VLC player!

Ideas? Thoughts? Suggestions?

AVI is just a container, not a format. So by not telling us which AVI format you used, we can't help you.

However, you should be using my new tutorial to turn dSLR h.264 footage into an easier to decode format that Vegas likes. I have the tutorial written here: http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2010/03/14/starting-up-with-a-dslr-and-sony-vegas/

Please note though, that if you shot in 24p (PF24) with your GH1, then you must remove pulldown. In that case, you should buy Cineform NeoSCENE, which is able to remove pulldown and transcode to its AVI format in a single step. Then, Vegas will be all happy with that format, and you can setup a 24p project.

Thanks. I will use your tutorial. I shot in 30p.

I think I know what the problem is - I used avi around DivX - would that be the issue?

I guess I am unclear on what is meant by "container" - can you give a brief "containers for dummies" overview?

MOV and AVI are containers. They are just a file format that can host in it a lot of different audio and video codecs. Think of them as a glue for audio and video streams, so you end up with a single file, instead of two. But in themselves, without any A/V codecs in them, they are just dummy, they don't do anything. Therefore, when you say "I exported in AVI", you should always mention the codec you actually used inside it. AVIs for example can hold Cineform, Huffuyv, Lagarith, XViD, h.264, DivX, etc codecs, and MOV can hold Sorenson, h.264, Avid DNxHD, ProRES, AIC, etc etc etc.
