Avi or mpeg-2

Okay so I want to save footage onto my external harddrive incase I want to use it in the future for some reason. I captured the video with premiere pro, but what format should I export it in? Avi or mpeg-2? If there is a better format let me know!
 
AVI would be a better for archiving footage than mpeg2 since several non-linear editing systems can work with AVI where as not many can work with mpeg2
