AVI files...?

Hello people...

I am filming a debate tonight which will probably end up being at least 2.5 hours long. The person hosting the debate would like a copy sent to them on an avi file.

How do i do this? Do I upload to finalcut express as normal,..but then what? I'm trying to figure out how to do this, but am worried that at 2.5 hours the file size will be too big..?

Can anyone please offer a simple step by step guide enabling me to send this footage in an avi format.

Many thanks,

Rob

Well, 2.5 hours is going to be a big file size, yes. It depends on the quality he wants... is it just going to web? or is he burning to DVD, or blu-ray?

I believe mpeg streamclip exports to AVI, and it's a free, invaluable tool. Cut it as you normally would, export your quicktime file as usual, then open that file in mpegstramclip and export as AVI.

further AVI as a "format" is just a wrapper, the encoding scheme could be anything? (i.e from uncompressed TIFF frames to highly compresses MJPEGS)

Thanks guys.
Do I export to a quick time movie first and then convert as an avi?
Also...how do i check the size of the avi file? Ihave a 4gb usb stick and hope to simply add to this and pass on the avi file..?

Sorry for the simpleton type questions.. :)

Ha...well that was annoying: Took 2 1/2 hours to export,..to only then capture half of it, and it ending up looking like unbroadcastable shite.

Experiment 2: Instead try exporting using quicktime conversion - MPEG 4 format: H.264, Image size 1280x720HD ( copied from a great youtube tutorial)...but now it's only 12% through and stil has like 18 HOURS export remaining..! 18 H O U R S ! -- My plan was to eventually send this MPEG4 file via the post on a USB stick, along with the 2 origional tapes for the dude to use as he wishes, but it's taking much longer than planned!

Any REAL tips would be appreciated... :)

There's no way you're going to be able to provide anything that will be quick to upload/download and render out when the video is 2 1/2 hours long.

And there's no way to get decent quality out of two and a half hours of video compressed down to under 4gb's. Sounds like you need to talk to this guy and explain that what he's asking for isn't possible
