I am wondering the most optimal way to get an AVI file into and out of Premiere Pro CS4.

Specifically I am wondering what's the best export type/non-compression for a file that will be converted, after rendered/encoded in Adobe Media Encoder CS4, back to AVI in the end. Since export as AVI is not an option in PPro CS4, there must be a preferred workflow.

I am also having problems with QuickTime DV Pal compression and wonder if there is a better option for my Pal project, intended for broadcast, without losing compression.

I will probably convert this file in MPEG Streamclip.

Any advice appreciated.

It is. There are several codecs available for avi wrapper, including uncompressed avi which is what I would use if you're planning on converting it to something else later.

You need to make your question more specific. What is the intended use of the avi file? Post work? Archive? Web viewing? AVI is nothing more than a wrapper; the codec that you use is what's important and will vary for different applications.

Intended for broadcast

Intended for broadcast

Hi. The footage is intended for broadcast on a PAL-based system.

My only specification was that the footage be delivered in AVI. It came to me as AVI with DV PAL codec. I am trying to pick the proper codec to travel well through the Premiere Pro/Media Encoder CS4 Mac export process, in order to be reconverted back into an AVI. There are several codecs available--my main concern is that compression be minimal so that the footage doesn't lose quality when being converted back to AVI after export/render.

In Premiere Pro CS4 for Mac, there is no export to AVI option.

My preset options are:

MP3

P2 movie

QuickTime (which is giving me a hard time)

Targa

Tiff

FLV/F4V

H.264

H.264 bly-ray

MPEG 4

MPEG 2

MPEG 2 DVD

MPEG 2 Blu-ray

Then within each of these presets I have more options for codecs.

Which of these presets should I use?

Many thanks!

I would use Quicktime and set the compressor to None. It's the same thing as AVI uncompress, just a different wrapper.

I will try that and hopefully I won't have encoding problems (and weird artifacts) in QuickTime encodings, as I have been.
