Avenger Stand opinions

I am in the process of negotiating a deal for a practically new Arri 300 on an Avenger stand as well as an Arri 150 with no stand. Both lights have barndoors. At this point, we are at $500 for the combo. I don't know much about Avenger stands? The one the Arri 300 is on looks like a stand you would use for a boom mike - not sure what those are called. I need to have a pretty portable kit? My question - is this combo of Avenger stand and Arri's a good choice for this? Does the price seem fair?

As always, I appreciate you taking time to respond.

I've used some of Avenger's kit stands and also their C-stands. I'm not sure which stand you're getting. Their kit stands are pretty good - solid and sturdy - certainly good enough for 150's and 300's. For C-stands I prefer Matthew's. I like Matthew's grip heads better - their 2 size receiver is a simpler than Avenger's 3. In a rush it's easy to make sense of what is what when putting in a flag in Matthew's heads.

+1 on the Matthews stands. Those things are top of the line. True, they are a bit spendy, but they will last FOREVER, and the grip heads will not slip. I was on a shoot this weekend where we used some Amvona stands, for the prices, those things are awsome. They are like 1/4 the price of a matthews. The avenger stands seem pretty tough, although I have never used one myself....

fwiw, I have owned both Matthews and Avenger C-stands since 1996. They are both high quality and any preference is just that - a preference. I wouldn't give a nod to Matthews just for being Matthews. In fact, one of the Matthews turtle bases has a bolt that broke off early in it's life. So, I can no longer take the stand out of the base.

But, really... they're all good. In fact, here's another brand to further confuse and amuse yourself with. American Grip

Talk about choices! One could go crazy trying to figure this out. I remain better informed and even more confused :-).

We actually have an Arri 300 on an Avenger stand. Don't worry about it, you won't be disappointed. Avenger's are great stands, and they're actually a division of Bogen/Manfrotto, who make awesome stands.

I wouldn't base your purchase on the stand. What you're buying is the lights, and you should decide if the price is worth those two lights.

Also, just remember that the Arri 300 is a fairly lightweight light, so you don't need a really heavy duty stand to support it.

Thank you for your input. I guess I'm not buying the setup after all. I told the guy I could not show up last Sunday since it is about a 2 hr. drive to get to his place. He pretty much told me in an aggressive manner to be there by Wednesday with cash or it was a no sale. Not sure what his problem is but I don't take kindly to threats. I'll keep looking.

Glad to help.

Have you checked ebay? We bought two lights off ebay with great results. Both are ARRI fresnels, a 1000 and a 300. We bought them at separate times from different people, but both lights work great and we had no problems. You don't get THAT great of a deal because so many people are interested in those lights, but it's less than you pay new.

Just keep looking and you'll find something you like.
