Hello everyone. I didn't get where my topic would fit best, so I posted it here, sorry for any inconvenience.
I have recently begun toying around with some VJ software (Resolume Avenue 3) and have discovered that i can use my webcam as an input device for creating layers that react visually to movements on screen, while i mix the signal with music and other visual effects. Sadly the resolution on it is depressing and it is only able to potrait my ugly because it is internal, therefore I was hoping it was possible to connect my SONY HDR-SR10 (AVCHD) and use that instead, which I figured out I couldn't. I've roamed the internet for quite a while and know a little about what the issue is:
I use an iMac with USB, Firewire 4 and miniDVI (no thunderbolt). My camera has s-video, miniUSB and HDMI output. While i understand that it isn't possible to use the USB connection, I've learned that it probably is possible to use one of the two other connections with some kind of device in between to "convert" the signal, enabling the iMac to _get it_! I've looked at some gear, including Blacmagics Intensity Shuttle: http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/models/ it sports a USB 3.0 output, my iMac only has USB 2.0, which as I understand, is not fast enough.. Would i be able to buy some kind of USB 3.0 adapter and make that work, because that solution seems reasonably prized? Unfortunately when you look at the tech spec, it says:
Which I'm guessing a deathblow, unless someone here knows otherwise ?There is also the Intensity Shuttle thunderbolt, can i perhaps get an external thunderbolt adapter for my mac? (I'm not fond of opening it and installing stuff since i have no warranty.) And the intensity extreme with both thunderbolt and HDMI - could the HDMI work somehow, maybe through firewire 4 input with an adapter?
I would like (badly) for any of these solutions to work because of the reasonable prize. If they don't, I've come across a little more expensive solution. The grass valley HD video converters, namely the ADVC110 (A cheaper solution but from what i understand a compromise in terms of input quality (s-video)) and the ADVC-HD50 which from what i understand can convert the signal to something my iMac _gets_ via HDMI (HDCP not supported -> Is my camera HDCP?) and with firewire as an output. That would be a glorious solution if it weren't so expensive. What to do?
