AVCHD and post work?

It seems AVCHD can be considered a pretty good acquisition format, at least for longer clips, right?
But it doesn't hold up so well when doing much post work due to it being 4:2:0, long GOP, low bit rate 24 or 28Mb...etc.

So my question is if you transcode it to another format do you then have a more robust video?
Like if you were planning to take it into after effects for considerable compositing, or significant color work, or chroma keying.. would that help make up for it's shortcomings?

If you take an interframe codec and transcode it to an intra frame one then you end up with intra frame footage, right?

If you transcode it to a 4:2:2 codec then you end up with video that can grade better right? Granted it didn't start out with as much information as if it has originally been 4:2:2, but at least it then would be as robust as it can be considering it's creation limits.

I looking at this right, or way off?
