Avatar size, best format?

Been trying for the last 20 minutes to get the image I want to use for my Avatar down to the right size without it looking like 6 pixels of colour only. What's the best way of saving from photoshop for the highest resoloution at that size. Your help would be very welcome.
 
Well what process are you using to create the image? Resizing? Cropping? Saving as JPEG? GIF?

Speaking of which... I should get an avatar again. Something to do today I suppose!
 
Exactly! I don't even read names much anymore. I recognize people by their avatar. I'd change mine, but I've had it since I started posting here and I think it would confuse people.
 
I'm using photoshop. I can resize, change resolution, crop and save as gif. tiff. jpeg etc. But whatever I do it just looks pixilatted at the size required in the rules. mmm. maybe I'll stick to Directing.
 
i think with a name like horse films and a huge graphic in your sig.. i doubt anyone will wonder who you are if you lose your avatar.. :)

try avatar sizer. google it to find it.. free app...
 
Sometimes adding a slight blur to the image will take out the pixelation, but then you lose definition. It depends on the image, some work, some don't.
 
by the by,

is there a thread that asks what each persons avatar represents? if not we need to start one..

id like to know the stories behind several users.. including horsey and toilet bob...
