Avatar 2,3 & 4

Cameron is making three sequels back to back to back, probably so he can have the top 5 spots on the box office charts all to himself. He's hired writers to finish the scripts for him, so that's promising. Cameron is a strong writer in areas of concept and structure but his scenes and dialogue tend to lack finesse. He's a broad strokes kind of guy, and hopefully the new writers will add some extra shading to these screenplays. I'm not sure we really need THREE Avatar sequels but I know I'll be watching them...And it's good to know Sad Max will be employed until the next decade.

I get that Avatar is the highest grossing film of all-time (assuming you don't take inflation into account), but I am surprised that we are getting not one, not two, but THREE sequels. That's a lot more than I ever thought could be done in that universe.

Though I do remember reading an interview with Cameron a while back where he said he thinks the universe he created with Avatar was one in which he could say everything he wants to say. So perhaps in his mind he needs 3 more.

It'll be interesting to see how audiences react to this.

His passion lies with the deep sea ****. He is fed up with much within the insustry. In his defense, at least he's "admitting" that he's "selling out"...

This seems foolish. I think even though Cameron has a ginormous bank account and Avatar was hugely successful, that doesn't guarantee sequel success, especially since these cost so much to make with the armies of CGI studios involved.

Wouldn't it make sense to make one, release it, see how it does, make another one if it does well, but be ready to pivot in a new direction if doesn't?

My running assumption has long been "Cameron always delivers the goods." But I don't see three sequels. I just don't.

Well if The Fast and The Furious can have 6 sequels, I don't see why not.
Well, Fast & Furious were pretty bad from one to another. But it still attracts people in theatres. So, I don't understand why, but it'll certainly be possible.

Can you imagine being a writer and taking meetings on this project? I wonder if Cameron actually had any idea of where he wanted to go with the franchise before meeting with the writers... Hopefully, these guys can take Cameron's ability to make big, entertaining movies and add some depth to the sequels.

I remember reading an interview in which Cameron stated that he might do a prequel to Avatar in addition to two sequels. So perhaps one of these three is gonna be the prequel? Maybe the two writers that wrote Rise of the Planet of the Apes were chosen to flesh out the script for an Avatar prequel partly due to their ability to successfully imagine and execute a proper prequel script to an iconic science fiction franchise?

“I haven’t really put pen to paper on it, but basically it goes back to the early expeditions of Pandora, and kind of what went wrong with the humans and the Na’vi and what that was like to be an explorer and living in that world. Because when we drop in, even in the first film in ‘Avatar 1,’ as it will be known in the future, we’re dropping into a process that’s 35 years in to a whole colonization.”

Is it imaginable that when the "big boys" meet at times in the Hollywood-canteen they say things like "I'm gonna out-sequel or over-prequel you"? Is it a "big-boy's-show-their-thing" thing maybe.... ;-)

I hope not. Prequels almost never work because they are backstory, and backstory is backstory because it's not interesting enough to be the story. Rise of the Apes isn't really a prequel, it's a remake of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, which was 4th in the series and because of the time travel element, a direct sequel chronologically.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes was weird. It's like a prequel to a movie that doesn't exist, requiring all the assumptions you would carry into a prequel for a movie which DOES exist.

Absent all the other Apes movies, it would make no sense. Or to the extent it does, it would end with the audience saying "huh what? That's IT?"
