Hi guys,

The Rode VideoMic HD was announced in January 2012. 1.5 years later there is still no word about its release. The spec sound awesome on paper, are there any rumors if it might still be released or if its just not doable?

Sorry, just kinda frustrated..

Cheers,
Raphael

The only answer to this is to ask Røde themselves.

Don't ask here, ask the people who really know - then come back here and post what they tell you.

There is still no word on a release date for the Videomic HD as yet. All I can suggest is to check back on the website from time to time for news and updates on products.

Alright...

Interesting product. If the sound was half way decent, it could be a viable alternative for the hdslr crowd. Might make a decent plant mic (can't be too directional being that short) or for other remote uses. You might imagine the mic is better than what comes on recorders like a zoom at a similar price. Wondering about limiters, low pass, AGC, and how easy it is to ride levels manually. It has a headphone jack and audio out. Trouble is touching it while recording is probably a deal killer.

Well it's been up on the Rode site for enough time to release it. The word is, market research says there's not enough general interest so they leave it up there to see if anyone asks about it and if it gets copied.

But in a practical sense it won't be good for speech where you have to get the mic in close to the voices .. hanging it out on a boom won't be good, you can't easily change the record level and there's no remote start and stop. There's no limiter and to a lesser degree it's mono and you have to sync it up in post. There's plenty of better small recorders available, they're all stereo and you can use a variety of other mics.

Apart from Shure, no other manufacturer has copied it, not Sennheiser, AT, or anyone, they do market research too. AFAIK, the Chinese haven't touched it and they copy everything, be interesting to see how long Shure has it available.

Cheers.
