Can I delete all the files from the autosave vault without losing any of the original files. I was about to do it right now to clear up my drive, but just thought I'd ask before I do it. Really dont feel like losing the last year of my life.
I wouldn't delete those files unless you're completely, 100% finished with the project and have backed it up or determined you'll never need to edit it again. FCP project files are generally under 10MB so even ten of those in the Auto Save vault isn't much with boot drives being generally 80GB+.
If you still however do wish to delete them, from the Desktop do a Find (Cmd + F) type "vault"
OPen the folder, select all (Cmd + A), then Send to trash (Cmd + Delete)
Empty the trash (Cmd + shift + delete)
Yeah you right they are pretty small.
But I've just managed to fill up my 250gb lacie drive though. I know its from bad clip managment ie. imported 5 minute clips where I'm only using very small sections. Whats the best way to sort older jobs out?...getting rid of some of those wasted gb's...
If you know you won't be editing the project again for a long time, you would back up only:
FCP Project file
any Graphics (.psd's, JPEG's, PICT's, TIFF's etc.)
any Audio (AIFF, WAV, MP3 etc.)
any LiveType, Motion or .MOV files generated outside FCP
If you want to keep it clean, do something like this:
Widget Project Folder:
Audio Folder:
Graphics:
Now if you have everything for the project inside of these folders you can trash everything in your Render Files folder>Project Name (or use Tools>Render Manager in FCP)
If you have good clean timecode and your tapes are labelled properly, you'll be able to use your FCP project file at a later date to recapture everything perfectly. So you can trash the files in your Capture Scratch>Project Name.
You can also use File>Media manager to really clean up an unwildly project. Look in the manual for a full expanation of how use this tool to "make offline" - be careful though, if you don't have good timecode/labelled tapes you may be re-capturing and editing all over again from scratch.
Some people (with $$$) will just copy the project over to a FireWire HD and "file" the drive away for whenever they need it. This make sense if you have say 15 tapes to recapture from - the cost of your time would exceed the cost of the drive....that is unless you consider your time worth less minimum wage....
