Automotive LCD monitors?

Hey guys.

Does anyone have experience with those cheap automotive LCD kits? I need to buy a few LCD monitors for non-critical onset viewing, and I was looking into the car variety of LCD's just to keep costs down (since I need at least three of them).

I'd like to find a monitor that does underscanning however, so if anyone knows of any kind of LCD that does underscanning (full DV frame), it'd be a great help to me.

Thanks.

Re: Automotive LCD monitors?

your chances of winning the lottery are probably greater than finding somthing in the realm of "consumer" electronics that can be considered "cheap" and has underscan ability..not to mention being small and portable. you would prob have to get somthing pro to get the underscan feature, and that means $ $ $. the only way you can get a poor boys underscan feature on a little cheapo lcd like that is if it has a 16:9 screen, and can do window boxing, and you happen to be shooting in letterbox mode. then you would be able to see the whole letterbox framed footage in the center of the windowboxed screen, but even that may have some overscan , and just be cropped off. and anyway, it would be really tiny to look at.. if you want to see the whole dv frame with a portable lcd..look into getting an old cheap laptop with a firewire in ,,then just run some cheap or free software to monitor the input at full rez

Yes, I thought about the laptop thing, but the problem is that I need three monitors for three sepperate inputs. I'd need a remarkable laptop to be able to display three channels of incomming video at the same time.

I'm not really concerned about quality, like resolution or color reproduction or anything like that...i just need a cheep portable method to display three streams of analog video at the same time...ideally with the entire frame showing.

Re: Automotive LCD monitors?

.. hmmmm, you could look into a color model consumer video home security/baby monitor/tv. with split screen capabilities.. alot of them can run 4 channels of composite video at once, and are only 200.00 or under. even though prob only 9-13 inches, they will show you whats going on with all 3 at once.
