i have several scenes coming up in my shoot that take place in a moving vehicle (mostly on a freeway) and some that are car to car, also mostly on a freeway. does the ois need to be on to keep the footage intelligable or can it be handheld and be ok? or am i going to need a mount or tripod in the back of a truck kind of thing?

Re: automotive cinematography

really depends on the nature of the shoot. You can get a car mount for our camera. I have shot a ton of speeding cars stuff on the highway with my DVX mounted inside the car. The is a Rap Video in the SCREEN GRABS section of this site that in some of the shots utilizes a camera mount on the outside of the car for some really cool looking shots! The video is called "CALIFORNIA".

If you're going to try to handhold it, definitely keep the OIS engaged.

But it'll be shaky and bouncy no matter what unless you use a car mount. The CineSaddle is a $300 beanbag that will give you glass-smooth car footage.
