Hi All just wondering if there was a way to automate a pan with full length green screen people,

example, i have a shot of a man walking on green screen to be coposited with either a high res digital still or a SDDV footage (Filmed Camera Pan)

not too great on after effects but keen to learn would appeciate any advice

Cheers

If you could find an old tread mill something pretty worthless, raise the guy on a small platform so it's even with the tread mill, and paint the treadmill and platform the exact same color (or maybe using cloth expose only the rubber walkway) you may pull it off. the hard part will be the shadows cast by the platform.

That's the only thing I can think of.

yeah, agreed. the man should be walking in place, then all you have to do is play the camera pan behind him. or set two simple keyframes to slide the still behind him at a walking pace visually.

If you have a reasonably large green screen, the way I would recommend you do this is to make a couple of marks on the screen above the actors heads. Then perform the pan with the camera and them walking from one side of the screen to the other.

Import the footage into after effects, perform a camera track on the marks you made on the screen (Hint, a big + sign made from gaff tape works well) and get the background image you want to use. Make sure the background image is larger than your actual footage (high rez stills possibly stretched a little in photoshop work well) and apply the camera track to it. This way, the camera moves at the same speed as your background for the pan, and it's easier than using treadmills and trying to invent a camera move on the computer.

well I would do it totally differently than sugguested, so long as the camera does not rotate on th horizontal axis, and is paralell to the actor, and the only camera movements are panning up/down left/right.

All you need is to shoot against a green corridor with tracking markers, then you need to take a series of digital still, then use Photoshop to create on long panoram (this will be your moving bg) you could of course do some changes in photoshop to remove/add/enhance that bg still.

Then just motion tack the greenscreen and apply it to the still, this way it will look perfecly seemless (the motion that is) you could even add lens blur etc.

Don't if the trackers go off screen just use Andrew Ks tutorial on linking markers.

Thanks guys these are all really help ideas, we have a nice big green screen so the camera track will work well, i have a 90 degree photography (Non paning) head on the tripod for standing shots, should i just put the other head back on 2 do the pans for the walk, like i wont lose too much qulity framing the other way?
