Auto-ND Filter?

Here is a silly question...this is probably very obvious, but I'm just getting back into using this camera a lot for the first time in many months.

I've set my DVX up to film out of the back window of my apartment. It is on 30P, shooting for 1 sec every 1 minute. I would like to do this continuously for several days...should be able to fit 60 hours of time-lapsed footage onto the tape this way.

My questions: a) Would auto-iris be a good or bad idea for this? On one hand it's obviously a bad idea, because it will keep the light during the day relatively similar all of the time...i.e. even if the sun is twice as bright at 5PM as 5AM, the auto-iris will make it so that they APPEAR the same, because it might make the aperture OPEN at a dark 5AM and F16 at a very light 5PM...right?

b) Yet at the same time, it seems as if auto-iris is a GOOD idea, because if I set my exposure at 5PM for, say, F4.8 with the ND Filter at 1/64...yeah, that'll expose right for 5PM, but by 8PM that setting will be too dark to even see.

AS SUCH, I guess my ultimate question is: Where is the middle-ground here? It seems to me that you either need to put it on auto-iris and have completely unrealistic light adjustments or put it on manual iris and either completely wash out part of the day in light or eliminate all night shots in complete darkness.

What's the answer!?
