Auto Cad

Anyone with CAD who can lend me a hand? I have a design and I'm trying to get it to work in a program. It's giving me an error, and I wanted to see if someone could see if it works in their CAD program.

What is the file format? I don't have a CAD program per se, but it claims to be able to open .dwg files. Send me a link and I'll give it a shot.

Hey thanks. Same problem. I imported the file into emachineshop's program and when I go to render it to 3d it gives me the same error. Which is "Error: The selected line directly covers another line. Please revise the design removing selected line."

There's about a billion lines....so hth am I supposed to know which one it is.
I used google SketchUp to make the original file and tried to import it into that program. So I dunno.

I'm no expert, but I believe that sketchup isn't a precise solid modeler. great for sketching... but maybe a model of just surfaces is the source of your problem.

now that you have nailed down the design with sketchup would it take too much time to re-model the parts in the emachineshop software?

I used JMC's design in Emachine's software and still get an error. He imported it in CAD and exported it as a CAD file, just as SketchUp. I dunno, I'm just going to give up on this one. The software they have is ridiculous.

I actually downloaded the app to try and figure it out. No luck. The software doesn't seem to support real 3D, even though they have a couple of examples on their site. The lines don't describe surfaces, they represent cuts made by a machine, so if any of the lines overlap, it gives an error. As such, you can't describe an object that is carved on both sides, like a sphere.

It seems to work best for defining a shape to be cut out of a flat sheet of metal.

For the design I just used Google SketchUp. I think people should check into it and see just how innovative that program really is. And with complete ease as well.
You can export it out to several different kinds of files. AutoCad 11-14 and 2004, 2003. Lots of options. Metric and Inches, just cool stuff they have on there.

Err, the design? I'm using it for an adapter I want to make for myself. I think that might be the question at hand eh? I'm looking for something more for me instead of the basic tubes/thorlab options. I wouldn't mind spending the extra money for it to be custom made, seeing how a 3inch tube/smr's and all the extra accesories come out over 150dollars.

I see, are you making it in auto cad to use on a CNC mill/lathe or just for a 3D design?

What part of florida are you from?

Yeah. I don't have a CNC machine, but looking to see if custom CNCist out there on the web will make it for me.

I'm just right outside of..hmm biggest town would Gainesville and it's about 1hour north of me. I'm in Ocala, don't know if you've heard of it. And I'm north of Orlando about and hour. Pretty much where the Tornado's hit last week or so.

Machinist is the word you'd call them. Do you have a pic or two of the design? I'm just about to upgrade my mill to CNC, have you ever thought getting into this kind of thing? The reason I ask is, machinist can cost big big bucks depending on the complexity of the design.

Oh yes I know where Ocala is, I just got back from Gainesville about a month and a half ago shooting a second part of a MV. Was there alot of damage to your town?

Yeah, that's the word. Machinist. I have a pic of the design. I'll up it now. I just got done playing around with the DVX sunshade trying to turn it into a Matte Box. Check the thread below this one. Here's a pic of the design. Free for whoever can machine it. It's a 2 part piece. Making it easier to take out the Focusing screen and machro's. It would connect onto a Cokin P-ring and the ring would go onto the DVX. Never thought about getting into it, don't have a machine!

and here's the MatteBox DVX sunshade

Nah, no damage. Which is fortunate. Although the villages/lake sumter was pretty tore up. I drove around there and checked out the damage and it's pretty crazy.

Well this pretty much looks like the back-end of the ifocus (55mm asian spacer), with a shorter spacer tube.

What are you using to hold the screen?

Are you going to be using a motor/vibrator of some sort inside, (static or non static)?

How do you want the tubes to connect, threaded, screw, etc..?

How are you going to add friction to the matte box hinge so the flag doesn't just flop down?

laugh, that's on the Matte box thread. They're working out all those details. I just made a quick design. Probably like how the do it with regular Matte boxes, is have something connecting the flag to the top by a "stick"<--? So it'll stay up or down.

car3o, I never got a call from you, but just so you know, e-machine.com software only takes one piece at a time. so if you are sending 2 it won't understand it. maybe thats the problem.
jmc, some people are just hammering the hinge and that gives them enough friction for the matte box.
