Hi all, I have been offered an as new Aurasoft series 800 1200W HMI with ballast.

Does anyone have any experience with this make?

Here's a few pics.

I've been offered it for £1000 ( $1700)

Here's the PDF file.

Thoughts in it?

I'd opt for something a little more durable for field use. Check out Pyramidfilms.com for other 1200W HMI options for less than $1700.

Hmmmm.... forum's acting funny. Can't edit my previous post.

The correct address is pyramid-films.com and they have Desisti 1200W HMI's for $500 less.

I have not used the Optex however.

I have seen their stuff on ebay but it costs a small fortune to get it sent to the UK.
This big HMI softlight is only an hours drive away from me!

That HMI soft light is nice, but it is more limited than a 1,200 PAR or fresnell. In orhter words, while you can achieve a soft look with all the lights, with the Aurasoft, you are limited to that look.

Nice darn light though...

I'd go along with the last post -- an HMI soft light is probably the least desirable of all HMI fixtures. You can always put a softbox on a fresnel HMI, but you can never take the "soft" out of that Aurasoft. And I find fresnel HMIs to be far less useful than PAR HMIs.

When you're using HMIs, you usually need as much punch as you can get. I've got some 575w fresnels that border on useless. But they'll still put out more light with a tighter beam than a 1200w soft would. The "sweet spot" for HMIs is the 1200w PAR, with a set of fresnel lenses and a speed ring for a softbox.
