Auditioning Voiceovers

We are auditioning people for a quick voiceover role (a telephone message) and I'm wondering if there is an easy way to do this so they don't have to come all the way to an audition (and we can concentrate on our more important roles).

What is usually done in this case?
A phone audition, I assumed, would not be ideal as far as quality.

I was thinking about having people record Mp3's and send them but I don't know if everyone has that capability.

Any thoughts?

Honestly, your best bet is too have a live audtion on record them using a good mic. Later you can proces them and see which you like best. Conversely if your just doing an audition and not planning on using any of the recording just do it over the phone. You can get in line phone mics preatty cheap I think.
