I recently thought I bought an AT897. While I was waiting, I reread my purchase conformation email and I noticed that I actually bought "the AT897 alternative" the Rode ntg-2.
I had some trouble finding an ntg-2 sample clip with the search feature, so I thought I'd post them up just in case they didn't exist. I plugged the ATSB and the Rode ntg-2 into an XLR->1/4" cable and had a 1/4"->1/8" converter that went straight into my Audigy ZS2. Although the clips were not recorded under the best of conditions for recording, the results were great. (They might be a little quiet.)

I believe that this is a very good microphone for the price (250 at soundprof.) The timbre lends itself to cinematic imagery.
While I was purchasing from soundprof, they had an advertisement for an Audio Technica Sound Bite mic (marked down 90% from retail $99.99!!!) I couldn't resist. The sound quality is superb for a ten dollar mic.

I hope this helps a lot of people who are thinking about buying one of these products. Can anyone link me to a page that has tips on boom mic operating?
