audio zoom?

like some other low end DV, when them press zoom, the audio db gets higher automatically?

it doesn't exactly work like that. it's not a volume control. they call it zoom mic since there are 2 mics inside: a omnidirectional mic and a directional one. the output signal is a mix of the two. and depending on the zoom position the contribution of one or other mic to the signal is higher (when fully zoomed just the directional contributes to the signal, when fully wide just the omni, and both do in intermediate positions).

zoom mics are purely a marketing thing. also the presence of two mics and additional circuits raise the noise level. you dont find that other than in low end cams.

anyway, with the dvx100 you can adjust the volume level of the input channels separately, if that's what u need (and have a graphic VUmeter on the lcd).

i was playing with that stupid feature on a little sony dv cam once. to my ears, it almost sounded like, the wider you shot, the more they mixed in the built-in camera mic (which is a wider cardioid,) and when you zoomed in, they mixed in the "shotgun." (more like "notgun.")
