Audio with dvx100a using fcp3

I'm shooting with the dvx100a using the camera mic on one channel and a shotgun mic on the other. The sound level is fine on the camera meters but when I capture the video into fcp3 it always comes out too low. I have to boost it to 12db to get a good level. Does anyone have any solutions to this or am I doing something wrong?

im in no means a FCP expert, but i do know that FCP has many audio capture settings that may be affecting your import. are you importing as Mono? duel mono? Stereo? Ch1+Ch2? i think there is one more too but i cant remember right now, take a look at your time line. so you have 2 audio trax right? did FCP capture both mics to one audio trax? say if you mute one of them and put on headphones can you hear the sound recorded with say the shotgun in both ears or only one?

and more specificly , the onboard mic pretty much sux unless the sound is right next to it, and even then its noisy. How far were you away was your camera from the subject? i suspect you were using your shotgun mic camera mounted or was it on a boom?

I captured with Ch1+Ch2 in dual mono but both mics are playing on both channels on the timeline. If I use stereo pair then each mic plays on a separate channel but then the volume level for each mic can't be adjusted separately, only as a pair.

But still the volume on both mics is still too low. I've got the level meter on the camera set in the middle on auto. The shotgun mic is on a boom handheld.

What is the level meter in FCP averaging?
Send To SoundTrack Pro Audio File
Then in STP, apply a Normalization filter.
I suspect your levels are in legal range for DV, so I want to know what the meters in FCP are telling you.
Also, it doesn't matter how you capture, mono, stereo, that can all be changed after the capture in your Timeline.

The level only goes to -15db at its peak without any adjustment. Where is Soundtrack Pro Audio File on FCP3 or is that only on 4?

OH, that's right, you're on FCP 3. There's no Send To options until 4, better in 5.

Ok, so here's what you do. Add audio tracks, duplicate your audio clips on other tracks. This will help to increase the levels.
