Audio when capturing from Canon XH A1

I'm having a strange problem that has me perplexed. When I capture from my XH A1, if I open the LCD screen and can hear the audio from the camera, the audio will be captured by Premiere. But if I tuck away the LCD screen, Premiere will capture the video but not the audio... am I doing something wrong or is this just the way it is?
