Audio-technica lav recommendation

I would strongly recommend contacting Oscar SoundTech.
All of their mics are smaller and better performing than your AT831c.
They can custom-wire any of them to work with your AT8531 power module.

Thanks, I've just emailed them.
Do you use their lav mics? Do you recall how much did you pay for them with and without the power module?
They have the OST-801/802 and the TL- 40. The specs do not look too different, other than the size. The TL- 40 looks amazing to use with actors.

The prices are/ were around $100 for the mic. I can't remember what the ball park is on the power module.

Why not just use a complete new system? After all the 'AT power module' is just the way pf powering the mic.
Most mic makers have Lav mics that could be powered by batteries or phantom power, most are a lot more compact than the AT system.

Not to repeat myself.. (copied from my comment over on the DVi group(
I have a couple of the (1st generation) AT 899s which sound good. The cables are rather stiff though.. Allegedly the later models have more flexible cables.
An OST mics yield the most bang-for-the-buck IMO. For around $200 USD, for a mic and a power supply / XLR adapter with the plug and jack. For instance a Sennheiser compatible mic could be used with a 100 series transmitter or in hard-wired config. The (Tram like) 801 and 802 have a presence peak. The 801 for under clothing. The 4mm oil can shaped TL40 has less or a presence peak.. basically flat response.
