I couldn't find much info on this cheap little mic, but I am going to buy one because of the tiny budget I have. Have any of you had any experience with it? I currently use a Canon XL2, but I wanted to invest into a mic and boom.

If you have an XL2, spend the extra $50 and buy an SGM1000. The difference is night and day, yet you don't kill your piggy bank. If you really do want an ATR, I'll sell you my old one...

Like I said, it's a huge difference for only another $50. With a boom pole, that isn't bad as long as the pole isn't a fishing rod. You gotta watch some of these people.

I actually don't know the difference between a fishing rod and boom pole?

Your next step up is around $250 for a decent mic, starting out, Azden works. Check out "K Tek Boom Poles", and it will give you a good look at decent boom poles. However, don't spend several hundred on one, it is just a stick after all.

I found a RODE NTG2 for $269. I am going to invest into that instead.

you can save 60 not buing the 2 - the ntg -1 is exacly the same and you do have phantom on your camera so you dont need battery option and extra weight .

I just grabbed a Rode NTG2 for $240 (Canadian) on Ebay... Brand new too...

I would shop at B&H and other reputable places BUT I live in Canada. So shipping is insane (since most companies use UPS) and the border and handling fees are absolutely horrible.

Oh yeah, what kind of boom pole will work with the Rode? I am not sure as to what kind of pole I should be using...

The gitzo poles are cheap and good. I got the 7560c 12'5" carbon fiber pole for $250, it is the best pole out there for the $$. You would be amazed how many times you need the extra reach. Shockmounts are hard to decide on. I have a k-tek one that is great (kssm for my hyper, but you need a ksm since your mic is longer), but if you need a cheap but decent one, the rode sm3 is tops in my book since it works on a pole or in the camera shoe and only costs $50
