Hi people, I am looking to buy a microphone, specifically the Audio Technica AT897. Its in the price range I want and have limited options in terms of choice where I am.. Is this mic good?
Anyone from Singapore, can you suggest any other mics and where I can go to get them as I plan to travel to Singapore soon to buy from there.

Thanks

Try the RODE NTG-2. You can pick it up from Hung Brothers in Sim Lim Square #03-83. It should be comparable. I think it's around S$400.

I have the at-897, it is a good mic for the price. But it isn't as directional as the true shotgun mics. It has a fairly wide pick up range compared to what is typically thought of as a "shotgun". Then again..this is a $250-$300 mic so you can't expect miracles. Check out B&H's kit if the shipping isn't too bad for you. They have the at-897 w/sm-3 shock mount and 1.5 foot cable for $270 usd. ($20 more than the mic itself)

I really like my AT897. Works well for it's purposes, but due to it's 'less directional' attributes, it allows versatility. On a budget, I use it to record voiceovers and such when needed. Works great. I tried it on an acoustic guitar once too, was surprised by the very good results.

I have done a number of shorts and contract jobs with my AT-897. You cannot beat it in the 250 dollar range. And to get something significantly better you will be spending another couple hundred beans.

I've had an at-897 and liked it. I like the Rode a little better because it runs a little hotter and seems a little warmer. Both are great mics for their price range, but, yes, their patterns are a little loose. I actually like that attribute for many situations and will definitely keep my Rode after I upgrade to a better shotgun.

Thanks Daniel, I will definitely make my way to Sim Lim Square. Do the Hung Brothers have the 897 as well?

I can't say for sure but I believe they have it, along with a bunch of other nice stuff. Just ask for Douglas and say Daniel sent you. He's very helpful and their prices are reasonable.

Hi Guys thanks a million, and Daniel will mention your name to them , its looking like I might go over sometime in October, so fingers crossed..

there's one question, when you say WARM, what do you mean? I assume it has nothing to do with the temperature of the mic literally but the quality of the sound? can someone explain?

so basically AT897 vs the Rode? which would you get?

For me "warm" means better lower-mid frequency response - ie. bass-ier if you like. The AT987 (and the ME66 to some extent) is more weighted towards the mid and upper-mid frequency and as such sounds less full or "warm" if you like. It's all down to personal preference really.

What you should do though, is to ask Douglas to let you test out the sound of the various microphones - he's quite amenable to that. Then you pick what sounds best to you.
