Can anyone tell me what kind of shock mount would go with this mic? and also if a dead cat wind screen would work on it?

Also has anyone compared this mic to the Rode NTG-1 or 2? I'm also now considering the Oktava Mk-012a , I should mention that I will be shooting a documentary, most likely a mix of both indoor and outdoor shooting, I've heard some clips of the Oktava and it sounds very nice. Is there an alternative to the $140 BBg thing and the $70 wind cover for it?

Thank you,

Joe.

That AT 875 was a real surprise. For $200 sheesh!, don't know if any short shotgun in that price range even compares to it.

Thanks Dan, I think I'm leaning toward the Oktava, I've seen a lot of videos that used the mic, and I really like the sound of it, Also because the mic is Hyper-cardoid, from my understanding it is better at picking up more than one persons voice if there are multiple people talking, which I think might be better for documentary purposes, and I heard that the mic can still be used outdoors as well.
Could you or anyone else tell me if at this site (http://www.sound-room.com/oktava?b=1) what the difference is between these 2 Oktava's besides color? and if this is the best place to buy one of these mics?

and if this shockmount they sell on the site is any good? http://www.sound-room.com/inc/sdetail/284

Also could anyone recommend Xlr cables for this mic, I will be plugging it right into the DVX100a, I will need at least a 20 foot cable.

Also , Thanks gco for your input.

Sound room is great to deal with. Tell them you are a dvxuser member and there is a discount (forgot how much).
Only diff between those two mics is the color.

Thanks gco,

I think I'm going with the Oktava MK-012 with hypercardoid with the -10db, The Baby ball gag with fuzzy windjammer and a K-tek kssm shockmount.

The mic sounds real nice from the video clips I found where it was used.

Sorry, was on a plane all day yesterday. I agree, Paul from the Soundroom is great to deal with and they are a very good place to buy your Oktava. Sounds like you are getting all of the right stuff for it.

Thanks Dan, yeah, I've been searching these boards for everything Oktava. Found a lot of good info.

Remeber that you are not going to be able to hear the diferences correctly without having good studio monitors set up right. If you don't have that kind of setup, you could just trust Dan's assessments of the mics.

Very true. I remember listening to mic samples on my earbuds and being very confused since they all sounded the same!

Yeah Dan I listened to the samples, read the article, great write up, thanks for doing that, I liked the sound of the 875, and the Oktava sounded great too, I didn't notice HUGE differences, but I searched all over this board for peoples footage who used the Oktava and from all the clips i've heard I really like sound it has over shotgun mics, the cheaper shotgun mics usually have some tinny sounding echoing indoors that I don't like very much and whoever will be holding my boom pole is not going to be a pro at aiming shotguns, and I can't afford both, so I wen't with the Oktava.

I purchased from sound room, the Oktava Mk-012 "bella nero" (-10db, hypercardoid), with the BBG, and Fuzzy Windjammer,

Then I got from BH, the K-tek Kssm mount, I already have a carbon fiber boompole i think its gitzo, its 8 feet I think, also I got the Starquad 25' XLR cable and some other stuff.

Thanks a lot for your help Dan and everyone else.

One more question.... Can I use gaffers tape to tape the XLR cable to my boom pole? Or what is the best solution to prevent any sound vibrations from that XLR cable on the boom?

I agree with Sane, I use velcro ties and they work fine. Just make sure that you have a skilled boom operator, the Oktava is more susceptible to handling noise than most of the other mics I tested. It's a great sounding mic and a relative bargain. My problem now is that I want all of the mics I tested, they are all great in certain ways.

Enjoy!

Dan
