i was thinking about a AT-4053b as my boom mic, plugged into a zoom h4n, is this a good combo?

also someone told me that a boom mic for independent films is only good outdoors and i would need another mic for indoors, is this true?

what 2 mics should i get with my zoom h4n?

thanks

Your friend is a little confused.

A boomed mic, that is a mic on the end of a boom pole, is usually going to give you the best sound both indoors and out, if you use the equipment properly.

The mic you place on the end of the boom usually varies by location and situation. The 4053b can record excellent sound, both indoors and out, but in general terms, is usually used indoors more often. A shotgun mic is more often used outdoors. In either case, some wind protection for the mic is usually used. Rode makes very good middle of the road shotguns and their NTG-3 is a great mic for the price. A 4053b and NTG-3 (what I have) is a excellent combo, and short of high end production, is a very capable and professional combination.

And please note that your sound, regardless of what equipment you buy, will only be as good as the skill of the recordist and editor. Judging from the question you asked, I would recommend you learn more about sound before you buy a bunch of gear, though a 4053b is a great place to start a kit from.

Either type of mic will record to a Zoom H series, but more portable recorder choices are available. For the mics mentioned, you will need 48v power and the Zoom H series and many others will do that. You didn't mention what camera you were using. You are probably better off recording to your cam (if it has 48v power), since it is much less hassle when both recording and editing.

The info I just gave you is in very general terms, your mileage may vary.

i am a sound engineer, and own a recording studio...my knowlege of sound its great in the "music production" but film is completely different....

i was just wondering which mics were best for isolation, so that i can get a thick tone from the actors without picking up echo, reverb, and also one for outside that will slightly pickup sounds of nature like some movies do...

will the AT4053b get the job done indoor/outdoor for now?

i am using a canon 7d right now..

Hi Craven.

How do you use your 4053b in music production? Just curious, as I just purchased this mic. I'm a studio musician/audio engineer, but I use the 4053b for video. It's still pretty new, but I like what I've heard so far. I don't use it outside because it's more susceptible to wind, and a Shotgun is more suited for the job. I also recently got the Rode NTG-3 and love it. I have some samples of the 4053b tested indoors here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=204848

Any audio person doing video work should at least have the basic trinity of mics: The Shotgun, The Hyper, and the Wireless Lav.
