Audio tech question

I just bought a MK012. I received a preamplifier, hypercardioid cap, and a
-10db attennuator.

I'm trying to learn the terms and audio pieces when it comes to audio. So any help assisting me in clarifying and understanding terms is greatly appreciated.

Now the way I understand it and correct me if I'm wrong "Phantom Power" is what the "preamplifier" supplies as far as voltage? The "hypercardioid" influences the audio pick up pattern from front to back. The attennuator reduces the voltage sent to the camera in order to prevent clipping? The cap is connected to the attenuator and the attenuator is then connected to the preamplifier? I will want to connect these three pieces and use them as a unit, correct?

Also, last question. There is a caution note that says before disconnecting the mic, to make sure the phantom power is off. How do I do that exactlly?

Correct across the board. You turn the phantom off and on through your mixer or if you don't have a mixer through the inside panel on your camera where the line selector is.

Maybe, You said you received the preamplifier so I'm thinking your referring to the body (power unit etc. (different companies call it different things)) as the preamp. If that's the case then no the "preamp" needs to get Phantom power. from the "real" mic preamp. THe pad is used to lower the out put of the capsule to the body so yes it does lower the out put to the camera but also to the body which is the first stage of amplification. The capsule creates a very very weak signal that is boosted to "mic level" by the body and then boosted to "line level" by the preamp (either built in to the DVX100 or external).

So Phantom power powers the body and is supplied by the preamp.

Good camera good mic, have fun.

yup, the preamp that comes with the mic is the part that needs the phantom power. there two preamps in play here - the one on the microphone, and the one in your mixer or camera.

the "real" preamp like noiz puts it is the serious amplifier that boosts the signal to a recordable level (which is called line level)

the mic's preamp body simply boosts the charge created by the diaphragm moving to a signal strong enough to move down a cable (this is called mic level)
