Audio sync nightmare - stereo track splits into 2x mono, and won't play ball!

I'm having a bit of an extended nightmare that I can't wake up from!

I have 2x simultaneous AVCHD camera footage tracks and some beautifully recorded audio, from a theatre promo I'm helping out with.

To sync them, I've been using pluraleyes.

When I re-import the FCP.xmp file, the sequence forces the good stereo audio into two mono audio channels, and it seems NOTHING I do can merge them back into a stereo track. I can't add keyframes. I don't have a yellow bar, or options for it.

Can anybody explain how I get two mono channels to merge into a stereo channel. In the descriptor, it even acknowledges that it is stereo, but it simply won't behave as intended.

Many thanks!

Edit the clips' audio channels in the project panel.
