Hi all,
I've been lurking about for the past few months absorbing everything I can, but I thought I would post and ask for some specific advice, I'll give you my situation and budget, and taking that, "what would you do?"
I am going to begin working on a production at the end of the year, with an initial budget of around 2000$ to get started on hardware/software for recording of a screenplay for an animated film. (This excludes what I'm paying my talent, etc, this $2000 is ONLY for a home studio setup.)
Currently I'm still working on the script/screenplay, and after that I'll be doing storyboards and groundwork art for the whole film and creating an animatic. It will be at that point I'll be looking to record my voice talent, so I can actually edit the animatic to the voice talent/music. So I won't need to actually buy or rent the gear until probably mid to late next year. (we all know how prices/gear fluctuates, but as I have read in the sticky on audio gear, apparently it remains a decent investment for a long time)
So, what we're looking at is this:
Around 15-20 minute 3D animated short film
2 main characters
4 support characters
My final format for this will be self distribution on DVD, and probably some festivals.
I am thinking at this point that I'll build a sound booth, (I have a friend who is a sound engineer who volunteered to help me with the layout of it, and where to aquire my dampening materials, and I'm pretty handy with tools and such)
And that I'll need 2 microphones, (most of the time just one) but some scenes will call for interaction, and I am unsure if mixing separately performed tracks of audio will give the desired result (I could be wrong here)
And some kind of mixer/normalizer, so when my VA's scream or whisper, I can adjust and clean up the audio (keep it from distorting)
Will need some kind of interface/capture software for my computer.
Will need a decent set of speakers for editing with.
Comp Specs:
asus p4p800eD
pent 4 3.0ghz
2gb ram
760gb storage
No pro audio card :/
Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb 256b
WinXP
I am fully willing to rent some of this hardware too if I can find somewhere nearby that I can get it from, I've not really done my research there yet. As for the microphones, I think they will be a good investment as I am probably going to keep producing animated shorts.
I also have the desire to get into indie filmmaking at some point, and this gear would come in handy/could be added to were I to buy a camera for a feature.
Thoughts, suggestions, comments? Thanks in advance guys.
