Audio Setup for Indie

Here goes. I'm trying to post something that won't take multiple back and forths to convey what I'm doing.
If I am shooting a golf movie outside, the shots will be mostly dialogue as well as golfing shots. I am renting not buying, I have a sound guy and boom guy at my disposal Is this a start to what I would need : AT4073a or MKH416, I figure will be a decent outdoor mic. A portable mixer so my sound guy can adjust levels. A limiter.
The portable mixer and limiter I have no idea what to ask for when I go rent. I know they have to be portable I appreciate this site for all it's helpful threads.

Re: Audio Setup for Indie

Both the AT4073a and MKH-416 are great and easily rentable.  If you've got an experienced sound mixer, then he'll either have equipment or know what to rent.  Normally, I'd recommend renting a Sound Devices 302 field mixer, but if your mixer doesn't know what he's doing, the mixer could do more harm than good with a 302.  If you're working with inexperienced crew, I'd keep things simple.  Go directly from your mic into your DVX Input 2 and set both channels to Input 2.  Set the level for one channel so your peaks aren't overloading (so 3-4 red bars are lighting up) and set the level for the second channel 2-3 notches lower to pick up unexpected loud peaks.

If you can avoid it - never do it , thats bad , if they dont have expirience they would ruin it with the mike only , try to find the right person - if he has trouble you can send hiss ass down here , that would no problem to teach him by mail to swim :)
if he is not a "wall" of cours
good mixer , good mike , if you can run separate to better recorder its even better
usually i would go with acouple of wierlwss for midium long and whak and talk shotes
good hyper cardioid for interiars ( even octava can do it ) , 16 feet boom at leas and good suspention , wind protection for outside
pzm is also anice idia for shotes that the mike from the top dont give you to much
hope that help

Re: Audio Setup for Indie

What about using the marantz pmd670? Everyone except the cameraman is new in my crew. We are all audio geeks though, so I think the learning curve could be lessened. I hear people talking about the pmd670. Would you recommend using it, does it co-exist with FCP HD? Thanks

Re: Audio Setup for Indie

Here's a list:

-Sennheiser 416
-Rycote Softie with PSC universal shock mount
-12' internally coiled cabled boom pole (KTEK, Ambient, VDB)
-10' xlr cable
-25' xlr cable
-2 or 3 lectro 411's (w/ lavs and output cables)
-Sound Devices 442
-Sony MDR7506 or Sennheiser HD280 headphones
-Petrol bag to hold it all (If you haven't checked these out yet, do. They are best design out there as far as bags for production sound go. We can all thank Oleg for that.)
-25' breakaway cable

If you want to run double system, add in some sort of recorder...it can be a PMD670, or whatever you have or want to use.

-Dave

Re: Audio Setup for Indie

The only thing I would add to Dave's list is a 50' and 100' balanced XLR. I'm on a shoot right now, and having longer cables has been a real time saver (parking my butt somewhere out of the way and getting to stay there through all of the setups.) You will find LOTS of different opinions on the various components, but it is a good list.

Oops, one other thing I would add is a good cart or table to hold your sound gear on. I picked up a great camping table (folds up into a bag like those nice folding camping chairs) for $15 at Target and it works great!
