Audio recording with an at4073a and a generator??

Does anyone know how far away you should put a generator to not get bleed into your audio? I have the at4073a which is pretty directional, but am I still gonna pick up echos? This will be in a heavily wooded area.

I can put the generator like 300 feet away, would that help?

As far as your cables will let you go. There's so many variables on how far sound will travel, the terrain makeup, humidity etc. so there is no number that anyone can give you. Set it up, test your sound if you can hear it, move it or put a sound blanket inbetween you and the genny. One thing for sure if your asking this question your on the right track, get the cleanest location sound you can.

Also depends on how loud your generator is. And the distance you can put it depends on the cables you run to it also; it's not a trivial task to ask electricity to travel 300'. You'll need some heavy-duty cables to pull that off.

I see. Thanks for the responses, I guess I'll do whatever the heck I can to not have to rely on the generator. The one thing that makes me nervous is the lights. I can swing the mixer and the camcorder and the mic, but lights will be a pain.....

Thanks again.

Stick it in a dip

Stick it in a dip

I recently shot with a genny on a short film shoot, and we managed to get the genny in a dip (like a ditch, or down a slop of ground). It bounced the audio away from the mics. Also, remember to always boom 180 degrees away from the genny to reduce noise as much as possible.

Last, sometimes, just sometimes, for some strange reason, getting the mic lower to the ground seems to help (so booming up).

Help this helps in some small way.
