Hi - new here and to filmmaking so appreciate your help and patience.
I'm involved with my first film with another new filmmaker. i'm sound ,he's film on this one.
I have a roland vs-880ex digital recorder (I do home music recording).
He just purchased a panasonic dvx-100a. (Yes - two months and he's still grinning ear to ear.)
so background behind. We are looking for the best sound recording and with the two pieces we have what would be our best option as to recording the two in sync for editing. The roland is mtc capable, unsure on the camera. will I need a SMPTE to MTC synchronizer such as the miniman or pps2? sugestions? or does the dvx support or clock to mtc(midi)? we still plan to route master outs to the camera for backup. timecode is my biggest worry.

My recorder does not support any TC, but my camera does. So I just slate the takes and synch in post. I also do a tail slate so I can check synch at both ends of the shot. If it was out of synch at the end of the take I can just slip the audio in post to synch it up. So far, it has never gone out of synch. Most takes are less then 2 minutes though...

And, if you record to both the camera and outboard, you can match the audio in post. (Assuming the speeds match.) (Or can be made to match.)

thx - we were hoping it would be as simple as slating but wanted to be sure it could be matched in post if needed, were not doing any lip syncing (as in a music video)yet and most shots will be under a minute. so sure things are good for where we're at now. but of course - looking ahead and well covering our asses also. cheap help tend to bore easy on set. Also I have to say that all over this board and the web itself there are newbys such as I stating their thanks over and over, and to not only those who post to my questions but also to those who answer questions for us all over the web, I add another thanks.
now that the inspiration speak is over - can we shoot?
