48k is the proper sample rate when recording audio for video, 44.1 when recording audio for an audio CD. Some workers prefer to record 96k for original material for video and 88.2 for the originals for music CDs, rendered down to 48 and 44.1 respectively in the final mastering process. Yes, a 44.1 file can be upconverted and vice versa but there are fewer chances of problems down the line if you record at the proper rate to begin with.

Yeah 48khz is the proper format as Steve mentioned but back to your original question. I prefer the zoom because I have used it and also because it has XLR inputs. I mean for the Tascam you can always get adapters but do you want to go that route? I suggest comparing both side by side or coming up with a list of what you need from a recorder and which ever can provide all of those needs go with that one.

p.s. This thread is a few days old but still good info for others.

Are you talking Zoom H2 or H4? I went with the DR-07 over the H2 as a 2ch backup recorder and I'm quite happy with it so far.

If you're talking about the H4n, you should be comparing it with the DR-100.

Zoom H4 original. He never mentioned which Zoom so I assumed he was referring to the H4. Either way hopefully he has made a decision.
