Audio Question

I was editing a project with fcp for the past few days, and find that the audio and video keep moving, so they don't line up... the video goes before the audio, or vice versa... any suggestions??

Do you mean that they are in sych after capture, but move around in the timeline?

(Loss of sych during capture is often due to timecode breaks, so try and prevent capturing "over" one or many.)

If you keep accidently moving you syched audio/video out of sych, try linking them together by selecting the tracks and then pressing the "apple button/command" (or whatever you call it, I just press it!!) and "L" button together.

I don't know if that answers your question though....?

First make sure you're playing them through the same setup. (i.e. both to computer or both out firewire)
Are they lined up in the timeline? If not turn on the aduio lock button in upper right (link selection)
Now when you move one the other will move. When this is off and you move one it should show a red number with how many frames offset.
If they line up in the timeline then your computer and drive may not be keeping up.
Make sure you have plenty of memory and drive space.
Go to prefs and set rt modes and rest of settings to minimize stess on your system (lower quality, 2:3:3:2 display, etc)

Good point Scott, I forgot about the delay with firewire footage.

Another thing is if you lock just a video or audio track of a clip, if you then drag of move the unlocked section, they will go out of sych.

... God, there are loads of ways to put footage out of sych.

I learned about using the lock on the audio/video the hard way. Spent hours after hours trying to figure out what was going wrong.
