audio problem?

I recorded some footage to the dvx100a with a small sony shotgun mic (made for pd150). I monitored the audio with headphones and everything sounded good. Furthermore, when I reviewed the tape afterward through the camera (headphones) it sounded fine as well. However when I captured to Premiere Pro 2.0 the audio the audio was soft and slightly distorted (like a bad radio signal).

I figure it maybe a problem with the firewire cable, soundcard, or a setting on either the camera or premiere,

Any Thoughts?

Thank You

Very unlikely to be firewire cable. Sound and video come across digitally so if you have a problem with one you'll have a problem with both. If your video was fine it wasn't the firewire. If your soundcard works fine for other things its doubtful it was that either. Actually, the most likely problem is that your headphones are not as great as you thought and weren't accurately reproducing what was actually being recorded which may have had a problem that you didn't hear.

Do you have some other software besides Premiere that you can use to try to capture? Just to compare and see if the result is the same. I vote for some problem with Premiere itself or the way it is setup.

As for the low audio levels, you may have had your headphones up too loud while shooting. Its a good idea to callibrate your headphones at the start of each shooting day: establish a known reference point, and set your headphone level accordingly.

Create a line-up tape for your camera with a 1kHz sine tone playing at -20dB, and use that to set your headphone levels from time to time.
