Audio playback for music video shoot?

I'm about to shoot a music video, but was wondering about playback on set. Traditionally they use a playback system, right? This is very low budget, and I'm wondering if there's a way to simply use like a boom box or something with a digital counter... shoot that every time I roll a take.

Any advice is appreciated.

Burn a dvd with your song playing over timecode, and use that on the set with a little portable DVD player.

For the music videos I've shot, I just shoot w/ a boombox playing for the parts where they were rapping. If they're well-practiced, they would hit what they need to hit, and then you can sync the crappy audio up with the studio-mixed version in post.

Er, as someone who has quite a few music video commissions / credits, I'd seriously recommend that you use more than a boombox !! The main problem is the band being able to play their instruments/sing/drum without being so loud that they can't hear the recording. The main problem is the drummer-- the drummer WILL be very loud, far louder than the recording, and you'll find that the rest of the band sync up to the drummer, and deviate majorly from the recording.

Some bands will have a big enough bass-amp that you can run a signal to that... this will be far closer to what you need than a boombox.

Find out who your local PA / audio kit suppliers are (the kind that do large scale gigs and pa installations), you'll probably be surprised how cheap it is to rent a couple of active PA speakers for a day.

Oh, and sync beeps do the job fine-- just make an audio CD with a few beeps at the start .. make sure that all your cams are recording sound. Drop them into the edit suite and line up the beeps by the audio waveforms ... job done.
