Audio Out of Sync Problem

I'm using a DVX-100A and a Sennheiser EW100 lav mic setup. I record the scene and capture it in Final Cut Pro with no problem. Now hear comes the problem. Playing long tracks (longer than 18 minutes) I've notice during the playback that the subject's lips move and the words coming out of the speakers is out of sync by a half a second. I played the tape on my camera and the audio and video sync is fine. Please help. This sync problem is driving me mad.

Re: Audio Out of Sync Problem

Ok -- welcome to FCP sync hell.

There are many causes and fixes and none seem to work one you've got the bug.

This WILL work:

Capture 15 minutes at a time. No more. Use log and capture to be overlap a frame or second or so if you want.

Now -- which QT are you using with which FCP on what machine? I'll try to help from there.

Good luck,

CaptM

Re: Audio Out of Sync Problem

Thanks for the info. I'm using a Imac G4, 10.3.5 OSX, Quicktime Player 6.5.1 and Final Cut Pro HD 4.5.

Re: Audio Out of Sync Problem

The problem would/could be that you might be capturing onto your system drive. I don't know how many drives your iMac might have. I assume it's only one. You'll need to get yourself a FW drive to capture to. You really don't want to be capturing onto your system drive.

For now, you might get away with capturing under 15minutes at a time.

Good luck,

Re: Audio Out of Sync Problem

I have had similiar problems. It only seems to occur when I hit capture now, before a timecode is registered on the tape. Try playing a couple of seconds before the clip you need and capture from there.

Re: Audio Out of Sync Problem

Grasshopper's recommendation is what I used 2 months ago when I had that nightmare. But in that case it was like 1-2 sec out-sync all clip long. If I am not mistaken the posted issue is at sync at the start and get out-of-sync late at the clip. That also happened to me and there is two things that might cause that. #1 you are adding an audio track that has different sampling rate than your footage (i.e. footage 48 and sound clip at 32). #2 that your captured clip is 29.97 and your sequence is 24 etc. I hope it is either of those, otherwise you will have to follow the Captain's orders!

Cheers!
