Audio OR Video going out of sync over 2 years?

Hello,

I am looking for somebody who could help me with a strange issue.

I’ve been rendering movies in Sony Vegas for the past 2 years, always using the same settings.
Divx 505 and Fraunhofer IIs. You can see the full settings in the enclosed JPG.

I am very precise and my videos are edited within miliseconds. They are music videos so timing is what I care for.
Some time ago I noticed that my old videos [approximately 2 years old] have bad audio/video sync.
The audio is played too early. 5 frames [0,2 seconds] before the time it should play judging from original edit.

To make things even more strange, this problem affects only 3 of my videos. There are other videos which have been rendered with exactly the same settings, but they keep the audio/video in sync.

How is it possible that a video, that was produced well, and used to play well, now after some time behaves differently?
If I did not make any modifications, and I did not, the files were just sitting on the hard drive - then what caused the audio track to shift in relation to video track?

It’s not the case that the relation in time between audio and video differs in various players and codecs.

The audio / video tracks are changed for ever. It's FIXED.
It’s like literally tearing apart one side of your trousers and then sewing it back in different place.

I say so, because I load these movies into Vegas, and the audio graph is 5 frames before the video graph.

here, have a look at this JPG I made up

You're talking abou the existing 2 yr old rendered AVI output files (as opposed to newly rendered output of the unchanged 2 yr old Vegas project files)?

I certainly can't see any reason why an existing 2 yr old AVI file would suddenly play differently, other than some problem with the player software which one would expect to affect any AVI files similarly.

Well, that's true -- if this is a rendered video file, then it was always that way. The sync doesn't change over time.

Well, that's the entire strangeness of this issue.
On other forums people are even suggesting "maybe your friends messed with the file?".
Guys. I don't have friends. And I have backup copies on CDs. And I watch these videos over and over before and after rendering and publishing them on Youtube.

Because what the whole issue revolves around is Youtube. I produce clips to subsequently publish them on youtube. Today it's all nice & easy because I can upload videos with uncompressed audio [WAV]. But 2 years ago due to the limits, I was forced to use the fraunhofer Mp3 to keep the AVI below 100MB.

Everything I've done and still do is with the use of VEGAS 3 (Build 138, YES - from the year 2002 - and I'm not crazy. I just advocate the policy that if a given thing is handy enough, there's no need to replace it.

And up to now everything worked fine on youtube. But recently some clips are having sync problems on youtube. And these are the very same clips that I have problems with here on my HDD.

So I'll say it again: clips that had perfect sync on my PC and on Youtube, are now out of sync on my PC as well as on Youtube. And I have not changed [intentionally] my PC configuration since several years. All I need is Divx 505 encoder, FFDshow packet, mp3 codes and that's virtually it.
here's the list;

sorry forgot to respond to this one

Unfortunately I don't have the uncompressed originals. I was in dire straits back then and could not afford keeping Gigabytes of data. But even If I did, I gather it wouldn't save me from trouble now. The clips are out there on youtube and they're broken...

Someone could ask why they were good for the past 2 years and suddenly go bad? Well, when the clip was compressed by Youtube 2 years ago it was fine. But in the last week Youtube have been re-de-compressing all their old clips to make them available in High Quality. I would be happy if they messed up all of my clips. I could say; hey - you do something totally wrong. But two clips out of the entire group... ? Now it's me who looks like a looney.

From what you're saying, this doesn't have anything to do with Vegas and has everything to do either with YouTube or with the files you rendered years ago. I'm not sure what we can do to help here.

The only thing I could suggest is re-synching the sound in Vegas and then rendering out new files.

Only to get it desynced again in the future?...

Would you be inclined to think that this is a codec/software issue?
Does it make any sense to restore my PC to the state and condition it was in 2007?
Because if that could help, I'm willing to do that.

Very unlikely. As I said, if that's what the file is like now, it's what it was always like. It doesn't change over time.

It would be interesting to take a copy of your .avi file and play it on another computer, and also to view the Youtube video from another computer, just to exclude the possibility that your own computer's codecs are somehow playing up. Although I was under the impression that Youtube recompressed and reformated uploaded films anyway. And any codec problem should affect any .avi file using that codec...

Yes, I took the file to other platforms and it's still out-of-sync...
It bears all the marks of being produced that way, with the audio being mixed too early.
But you know, it's 2009 now and it applies to all platforms and I won't change it.
Maybe I sould try installing some old FFDshow stuff.

But I'm a musician and a video maker. It's virtually all I do and I do it all the time. And I have a fukcing sharp ear and eye and I watch the clips over and over before and after the rendering. So there is no way it could have been produced with bad sync. It was fine up to now. And it just frustrates the hell out of me that a thing like that happens to me and I can't explain it. I'm not using any sophisticated technology that is unstable and prone to crash. Divx and mp3, could there be anything more simple and popular?

As far as the youtube version of the clip is concerned - it varies from PC to PC. My friend says it plays allright. But you know, maybe he just doesn't discern the difference because he's not as paranoic in terms of proper timing as me.

But if you look at this video, and you happen to have it out-of-sync, you should really see that the fingerwork and the notes are really apart:
