Audio Now, Video Later

I've been reading about the forthcoming Panasonic HMC 150 and hope to purchase one in the fall. I would like to learn Edius. I'm completely new to this except for reading the forum for some time.

My questions are these. Would it be wise to purchase Edius now and learn to edit only the audio side (rather than purchasing less expensive audio only software)? Will I be able to ouput to CDs for audio only?

I recently ordered the Zoom H2 for practice http://www.samsontech.com/products/productpage.cfm?prodID=1916

Forgive if this has been covered. Thanks.

You can export PCM WAV, AC3 and AIFF audio-only files from EDIUS. However, if you're doing a lot of audio work, you'll probably find yourself exporting audio and taking it elsewhere for more comprehensive work.

Alternatively, depending on the work, you could also look at using VST plug-ins within EDIUS. Third parties such as New Blue FX and Bias have VST plug-ins.

This is nice to know. I think starting early with Edius may be the way to do it and the VST plug-ins sound viable. I looked at the ones you mentioned and possibly Sound Forge 9 as well. Thanks.

If you want to get used to edius, I'd recommend tutorials or downloading some video mterial you can play with. It's not an audio application, as such- you have all the video tools getting in the way. Soundforge, for example, has a lot more features. Or you could try audacity, which is an open source audio editor- quite good, loaded up with some nice effects (their noise removal is very useful- it's saved me on some professional video jobs) and free.
You could use edius for audio, but I imagine you'll just want to fill those blank video windows with something- even just a few stills!

Definitely agree with rob. You could even grab a non-DRM-ed WMV (like those included on some Enhanced CDs) to play around with.

It's best to see how audio and video interact together in EDIUS.

I downloaded Audacity...thanks for the tip. Price was right.

It probably will be hard to resist adding video with Edius but that would be ok. I have some things in mind.

Thanks for the tips.
