Audio monitoring/playback issue with DVX100A

I'm a very happy DVX100A user however I do have an audio monitoring issue/question I'd like answered. I'm working on a project where I often have to work as a one man band (i.e. no sound guy) The first time I did this I was wearing headphones to monitor my audio levels however my camera has delayed playback so I'd hear everything a few seconds after the person actually said it. it's very disconcerting when you're trying to interview someone or film a conversation. I basically cannot film and interview and wear headphones. I called Abel Cine Tech (where I purchased my camera) and they said this is because the camera is designed in such a way that you're listening to the audio after it has been laid down to tape. Is this true? Is there a way around this?

While I wouldn't say that the audio is delayed a few seconds, there is a delay, and the only way around it would be to shoot in 60i. The thing that I do is hold one headphone off of my ear so that I can talk and monitor at the same time.

yeah, you'll hear a delay when shooting in 24fps mode, but not in 30fps mode. It's annoying.

the delay is about 2 frames (pal vertion)
dont understand what might be the diference in 24p since the camera dont do anithing else then 60i all the time and 50i on pal
uou are alwais heare befor the recording after analog to digital and vesa to analog but never after tape in record mode - ( confidence head - even 900 ciana alta sony doesnt have this , tell the who ever told it start learning befor he put crap in your ears )
ok - now for the unswers - you need good isolation headphones -or just not to lissen at all :-)
thats why i hate this camera:-)

Do higher-end 24p cams have this issue?

My understanding of it: Because of the way 24p is recorded, you're choices are a) delayed audio when monitoring, but synced on the tape, or b) normal audio in the headphones, but you gotta diddle with the sync in post.

I know which I prefer. :)

WOW so I guess when looking for a sound guy, you should find someone that has experience with monitoring 24P tapings then huh? I have not noticed the delay in the headphones as I monitor my own audio but I HAVE heard it in the computer. Now, I did a project last week and I had a serious delay going on and I went into my A/V settings in FCP and changed my audio from Built in Audio to Firewire and then printed to tape again and the audio was in sync.

Re: Audio monitoring/playback issue with DVX100A

When I shoot I use a mixer and monitor my sound from the mixer and the cam. The headphones from the mixer have no lag, and the ones from camera have lag but it helps me verify the audio in the camera.

Re: Audio monitoring/playback issue with DVX100A

This is only a problem for me when I'm not isolated enough. When I have the good cans on, it's not very noticeable. Unless of course, I say something to one of the actors, at which time I get really disoriented. ;D

When I'm doing camera and interviewing one-man-band-style it drives me nuts. I can't stand to hear my own voice anyway, but this is pure torture.

Reason # 829 to hire/use a soundman. ;)
