Audio Mixer choking down buffer?

I can't say as this is a 4.51 thing, but I've never noticed it before. I've also just reformatted my system in the last couple of weeks though, so....

Anyways, has anyone noticed that when they open up the audio mixer that the buffer just chokes all the way down to a frame or two. I've got a window of like 140 ish frame buffer in 1080. I've got a simple 30 second one track of video, one track of audio on the timeline. I open up the audio mixer and I just watch my buffer go down, down, down. Not to the point (on this project) that playback stops due to frame drop... but to the point that playback is no smooth and audio becomes 'glitchy'... Anyone else experience this?

Thanks,
Jason

The audio mixer doesn't use the buffer in order to keep response time accurate to timeline node changes. Otherwise it'd be like trying to add effects with a 3-second delay. Gets challenging.

Brandon, Thanks. I did read that on the EDIUS forum. My concern was that it had never happened before.

I did try it after doing some other stuff to my system, and it didn't happen in a 720 project, but did in a small 1080 project, but that seems to be more a limitation of my system. In other words, it happens sometimes, not all the time. Before, I never noticed it...

Thanks for the info. Looks like *most* of my problems have been at least somewhat alleviated.

I am still quite concerned about the loss of realtime in Title MOtion Pro. I am downloading the 4.51c right now (it's ticking along at a bismal 10k...:) ) so I will see if that somehow fixes that problem...

Thanks,
Jason

The "skipping" is generally a sign that there's a peak in the complexity of the project. In normal buffered playback, the buffer "gets you through" the peak, but when the audio mixer is open and there's no buffer, you get stuck.

Kind of like how if you're going fast enough you can "skip over" a pothole, but if you're going slower, you'll thump right into it.

i have figured out the cause of my loss of realtime performance in 4.51 and 4.51c...

EDIUS does not recognize HT as one of my systems capabilities on startup... It did in all prior versions. I fresh installed the discs, and ran the same tests... All were fine and the buffer never faltered, even at 12 frames. It stayed maxed.

4.5x on startup:
2 processors, MMX, MMX2, SSE, SSE2, SSE3.

All prior versions of EDIUS on startup:
2 processors, HT, MMX, MMX2, SSE, SSE2, SSE3.

Result:
Loss of realtime performance in EDIUS 4.51 and 4.51c

Solution:
I haven't a friggin' clue. Hopin' someone much smarter than I will have the solution. It would sure be a shame to have to stick with 4.24. Other than losing realtime... I really love the improvements 4.5x has brought. But, realtime is too important to me, and it sucks to not have the same screaming EDIUS that I always had.

Anyways... Curious to know if anyone who has updated and had HT before, does or does not have it recognized anymore.

Thanks,
Jason

I think that's purely cosmetic, Edius still sees all processors in system, including the logical processors that represent the HT cores.

Check whether CPU utilization hits 100% instead of 50% while using Edius.

CPU hits 100 at peak. HT was shown always until 4.5x. 2 processors has always been shown (never 4). Realtime loss parallels loss of HT as function in 4.5x startup...

HT I was assuming would be Hyper-threading, but I've actually read conflicting info on whether or not the Yonah (Core Duo 2.16 t2600) supports Hyper-threading....? Hypertransport is an AMD only thing isn't it?

Whatever it is, I can only surmise that EDIUS recognized and took advantage of it with prior builds. Now, it doesn't recognize it and real time performance has taken a hit...

'tis my puzzle.

I wonder if anyone out there using a core duo (Yonah), or even my exact processor could confirm this same behavior. Loss of realtime in some funtions and HT no longer showing up on startup with 4.5x

Later,
Jason
