Audio: live rock show

Hello,

I was recording a live rock show over the weekend. It is a very important gig to capture on video for my client and they wanted me to get a direct feed from the soundboard, which I did. I also used my shotgun mic on a separate channel as my backup.

After I captured the footage I realized that my feed from the soundboard was too loud. The singer's vocal clips quite badly whenever she raises her volume. Needless to say alot of it is unusable.

Now I have the task of making my shotgun track sound as good as possible. Now if there is magic plugin filter out there for this please let me know LOL! There probably isn't any but if any of you know how I should play with the equalizer to just make it sound good, any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

thats a tricky situation you got there... If its a pretty important job with a decent budget I would suggest having an audio tech see what they can do with it.

It's a constant problem with getting a direct feed from the board. Most times you're at the mercy of the board op, which might have clipped it during the show.

Besides distortion removal plugins for protools or in something like Logic, what I like to do is put a nice reverb on the shotgun channel, and it adds a little bit of "livelyness" and makes it a fake stereo signal from the boring mono track. That, and some tweaking of the EQ where the shotgun is deficient is about as best you can do. Hopefully they had a good mix, but most likely not, so you do the best you can.
