audio kit thoughts

Jeff Anderson

Custom Title!
Ok I've been operating on an NTG1 and a mic stand going into my HVX for too long and its time to step things up as I'm starting a production of my own (not work related for once) in the fall and after some researching here's what I've got. I'd really appreciate any thoughts or giant flaws I might have. I'm going for low budget quality gear that I wont quickly outgrow. The budget is expandable though, so speak up if I'm missing something. Also keep in mind that a friend will be running sound who is inexperienced but we are going to do some fun stuff over the summer solely to build our skillsets and find any flaws in our system. Intended uses will be short narrative and documentary work.

Gitzo 3560 CF Boom Pole
Ktek Zeppelin for NTG-1 (I figure if we think the NTG-1 wont work for us, I get a 416 or similiar and use it in the zep for exterior work)
AKG SE300/CK93 Hyper for indoor work
Already have Rode SM-3 shockmount so we'll give that a try for the AKG
SD-302 mixer
Petrol Eargonizer 1
2 G2 systems
2 Countryman EMW's (XLR with break for g2)
Another pair of 7506's (already have one for me, thought the boom op should get some too :))

assorted sound blankets, stands for sound blankets, snakes, various length mic cables, and lots of batteries are in the budget too just havent been real specific with these yet.

I really want an external recorder but cant justify the cost yet so its on the waiting list for now along with some listentech's for IFB (would be nice to have at work anyways - maybe they should buy me some...)

let me know what ya'll think - thanks!

Jeff

Looks like a great start! I would go with the at4073a if you can swing it, since you are spending so much $200 more for a much better shotgun is worth it.

Well I would go with a better shotgun but I've already got the NTG1 so I thought I'd see how well it worked. If it doesnt work out, then i'll start looking at the 4073, 416, etc. I've been happy with the NTG-1 but not blown away either so we'll see. Thanks for the input! Sometimes its just good to get that second and third nod with big purchases especially when I'm a tad green in the audio field. Also ordered both Jay Rose books along with one about sound design from the same series. Maybe it'll keep me from asking any dumb questions :)

Hey, there are no dumb questions!

You will LOVE the 302!!

I am sure the ntg1 is fine if you already have it. i bet you will be using that hyper the most when you compare the two. I would get the 20mm bbg, jammer and k-tek kssm shockmount (soft bands). You may find you like it better outside than the lesser shotgun (if you are in a situation that the greater reach and rejection of a shotgun aren't needed). You may also want to consider the rycote softie 9for the shotgun) if you don't plan on working in high wind.

interesting though on the bbg and windjammer and using the akg outdoors... I may have to think about that and wait on a big zeppelin. do you think the kssm will be that much of an improvement over the sm3? I know it works great to reduce noise on the oktava, but didnt know if it was worth it with the akg. The sm3 is another item thats already in my kit otherwise I would probably just go with the KSSM since it gets so much good press here.

Really looking forward to the 302 - thought about the eng44 and other lesser options but I just dont want to regret it - and the 302 just looks more solid and robust.

I bet I could come up with some dumb questions if I tried... Now to go think about using the AKG outside, BBG, etc...

I really really like the kssm. Especially w/ the bbg. I have the sm3 and it is an absoloute POS in comparison. sorry for the bluntness. get the kssm and don't look back!

Cool, the KSSM it is then - these are the exact thoughts I'm looking for. Any other automatic replacements? The more I'm reading the more i'm leaning towards a used 416 but I'll wait til we get to really push the ntg1 a bit more and see what else we are going to need. No sense in buying one if I'm going to be indoors the whole time and using the AKG the whole time. Anyone with thoughts on a t-powered 416? I see them go for cheap used every once in a while and I'll have t-power on the 302... any reason not to go t-power?

The 416 has a very tight pattern- great if you have an experienced boom op (not so good otherwise) The 4073 is a little more forgiving.

T power works fine, but you cant run t and phantom power at the same time to different mics on different channels w/ the 302. I would stay away for that reason. i am always booming and laving with phantom power on different channels.

I have seen a 416 p48 for $700 used at trew, but they were snapped up quick gone gone gone. If you start looking at a new 416 (1100) it is not that much of a stretch to go with the sanken cs3e (1300)... that is what I will be doing soon. For now I am just using my schoeps for everything, but I am almost exclusively indoors and b-roll.

ahh so its always t power OR phantom power - didnt think of that being a problem. Probably will just go with a phantom power then when the time comes. The sanken is tempting especially if I cant find anything used. Just drooled over the polar plots matt posted...

the same 416t you saw at trew is what sparked my interest - it didnt last long up there at all...

You can get a 48V to 12T adapter (PSC makes a good one) so you can mix and match 48 and 12 on the 302. I did it last Saturday, and it works just fine. Leave the 302 set on 48V and then drop the adapter in on the mic.
