Audio interview in interior locations

Hi all, I am about to start a short film and am doing some audio interviews in people's homes.

I have researched this and it seems everyone advises to use a shotgun on a boom and a lavelier mic as well, i.e. 2 mics, which I own.

However, I have done an audio test inside with my Sennheiser MD46 and I like the quality of the recording when I play it back. This mic though is supposed to be used for external interviews, events etc. Is there any audio expert out there who thinks it is ok to use the MD46 instead of the shotgun and should the MD46 be put on a boom?

The MD46 is more of an ENG type reporter's mic which should be used up close.

My first choice without being there would be a Hypercardioid on a boom along with a Lav.

An interference tube "shotgun Mic" would not be my first choice for interiors.

I concur with David. If you can't use the MD46 in it's intended manner, both a boom mic and a lavaliere. On two separate tracks of course, and choose/use the best sounding one in post.

Depending on the room, a hypercardioid or a short shotgun will work. A lav as a "backup" that is hardwired. That's what I've done when I've had to do sit down interviews. The ones I've done were in hotel rooms and I used either a Sanken CS-1 or Sennheiser MKH50. There are other great choices, as well, those are just what were available to me at the time and they worked well for me. For the lav, I just used an omni lav. I didn't have to worry about hiding it, so I just clipped them on a lapel or tie. An MD46 on a stand that is positioned like a boom mic would be a poor choice for this situation.

Just make sure that things are tied down, in terms of noise. If you are in someone's home, make sure the air conditioning system/heat is turned off while you are rolling. Same with things like a refrigerator or things with compressors or other things that kick on at odd times. That's why using hotel rooms (nice hotel rooms) is great. You book 3 or 4 rooms next to each other, and you use the one in the middle. Nobody on either side of you to make noise. Easily controllable environment.
