Just wondering if I could get some advice for filming audio for interviews. I am making a short documentary.

I am borrowing mics from my school. I know they have boom mics and probably wireless lav mics and possibly others. What type of mics is best for filming interviews?

Filming where, under what conditions? Big difference between a sit down in an office and on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier during operations.

I would say hypercardioid mic on a boomstand for a sitdown interview. If there would be too much movement for that, then go to wired lav, and lastly, use a wireless lav if the wire would cause problems or create issues.

You know it is funny but I have never seen what a wired lav looks like... Care to provide a link?

They're the mic capsule you're familiar with in a wireless but the cable terminates in an XLR connector instead of a plug for the transmitter. You plug a cable into that that goes to the mixer, recorder, or camera. Here's one example of dozens ... http://www.trewaudio.com/store/product.php?productid=376&cat=43&page=1

Wreless lavs are the mic of last resort, when simply nothing else can work with the shot. There's an old Hollywood adage that reads "Always use a cable, whenver you are able."

the interviews will be sit down interviews. likely in a private room. Sounds like a lav mic is best? How about if I film the interviews in a hospital with some background noise? Would the lav mic still be best then?

Very likely - the close proximity of the mic to the speakers mouth will reduce the influence of the background sounds
