Audio for auditions?

I'm holding auditions and want to record them, but I'm not sure on how to do the audio. In this situation it doesn't have to be perfect, but it needs to be clearly audible. I want it to be as simple and unobtrusive as possible, so I want to lean away from a wireless/having someone on the boom. These auditions are about 5 minutes each, so no setup time would be best, but I'd like to give them some freedom of movement.

Would an omni-directional handheld mic on a stand be alright? Or would I even be okay with the on-camera mic as long as it's kept within a few meters?

An omni mic on a stand could work, especially if its significantly closer to the actor than the on-camera mic would be. I'm not sure that I would use a handheld mic, since most of the handheld omnis used for broadcast news are dynamic mics, and as such the sensitivity will drop off significantly over a very short distance.

A Cardioid condensor mic would likely give better results. As long as its positioned in such a way that the actor stays roughly on-axis, you'll be in good shape.

I'll look to see if I have access to one of those. Only thing I'm sure I have though is an NTG2, a long shotgun, a handheld and some low quality wireless LAVs. Best to use out of those?

Of those options, I think the NTG-2 would be the best as it's pretty well behaved indoors. The long gun might have too tight a pattern making it hard for the 'auditionee' to stay on-mic, the handheld would require them to worry about the mic instead of their performance, and the lavs would be too fiddly to put on each candidate. I'm remembering the interviews during the auditions for the show "So You Think You Can Dance" where they used a 'gun on a stand at the stage edge about 4 feet from the talent - worked just fine.
